Mikato meet Nexus

Post by Wuufu »

Everyone who was old enough to comprehend remembers the day the gateway appeared in orbit around Mikato. It was so quick. One second there was nothing, the next there was something. The small satellite network around the planet, battling against the debris from the recent conflicts, tried their best to analyse it but there were few that were designed to do anything but provide planet-side services.

The few that could do more immediately alerted the headquarters of SG Space, the burgeoning space agency of the newly formed Mitaku Federation. Located on the outskirts of the capital city of Ikjin in the Taehae Canton, the headquarters was a circular building which oversaw multiple space staging areas across the planet, kept a close eye for extraterrestrial life, and reviewed data spewed back to it by the many scientific research stations controlled by the agency.

The command centre of the agency, colloquially called the Space Situation Room, was a sealed room inside the building that was rectangular in nature, and setup almost like a cinema. At the front, a large screen filled the wall, displaying various information from both space and around the planet. In front of that, a holographic image, pioneering technology reserved for military, scientific and governmental use, displayed a representation on the planet and the satellite dishes floating around. Behind that, and on increasingly raised platforms, were rows of desks with computers on.

And at the top of this, with a circular desk filled with screens in the centre of the last aisle, sat the current on duty situation officer, Taran Zha.

* * * * *

Taran Zha was a short male Mitaku of the red skinned variety, with greying hair and drooping antenna. It was late afternoon on a particularly dull day with only one day left to end a particularly dull week. SG Space had no launches, no real major observations, and a lot of routine cleanup.

Taran sighed, leaning back on his chair with a mug of Kaladian tea in hand. A favoured beverage of many different varieties on the planet, his a deep fruity concoction, it was usually drunk hot without any additions.

"Arvel! Any update on whether we're due that shipment of data disks in the next hour?"

Arvel Fiumara, a young blue skinned Mitaku, glanced back at his supervisor. "Err... I think they're due this evening, sir."

Taran just grunted, which Arvel took to mean that he was cleared of this particular conversation, and glanced back down at his screen. Something had popped up on his display and it took a while for his mind to process what he was seeing. "Er, sir... can you look at this?"

Taran sighed again, took a sip at his drink, and leaned forward enough to tap a few commands to transfer the required view onto one of his screens. A moment passed, and his feet dropped off the desk where it had been stationed. What was that thing?

"S.O!" another person yelled. "We've got some kind of spatial anomaly that's just appeared fifty thousand kilometres above the planet. I'm detecting a lot of strange readings-"

"S.O!" yet another person. "There's something emerging from it!"

"Good god," Taran couldn't help himself. It could well be an invasion of sorts, and it wasn't a good time for it. The agency had very little in terms of a military presence in space, and only a smattering of planetary defences.

Grabbing for a nearby book, he quickly moved through to the relevant procedure page and began reading off the list of necessary instructions, not wanting to miss a beat. "Take us to code red! Activate all planetary defence modules. Alert SG Defence to go to prepared mode. Lock down all satellite communications. Activate secure paging code 1100."

Glancing up at the dimmed red light filling the room and the now obvious portal, wormhole or gate of some kind filling the far screen, an object of some kind emerging from it, he grimaced. It wouldn't be long before he was relieved again, his superiors taking over the operation against whatever this thing was. Once again, he would be pushed aside from anything that might resemble a position of authority.

Ah well, he could enjoy this moment while it lasted.

"And somebody get me a refill for my tea!"

Gate 6429
Location 397,184,502
Nexus

+ Re-establishing link with reality
++ Contact made
+++ Gate location secure
++++ Enlarging apeture

The Gate widened, revealing the blackness of space dominated by the shining bulk of a water-based world. It was, to the Owners at least, a fairly standard Gate opening. The dozen Clients who'd expressed an interest in being part of the ceremony, probably with the hope of being assigned Mentor status, celebrated on the observation craft; impressed with the reality bending technologies on show.

This was the Gate's third opening, and probably the last re-opening it would have to do. The first occurrence had been microscopic and momentary, making sure the local environment wasn't a star, or a black hole. The records of the Owners didn't go back right to the beginning of the Nexus, but they suspected the protocol for opening Gates that had been standard practice since records began, was in place after a Gate was opened without such a safeguard. The second opening had allowed the passage of a number of Owner scout craft, who'd discovered this star system relatively close to the Gate, less than 10 lightyears away. It had been emitting the electromagnetic signature of a relatively advanced civilisation and the Owners privately congratulated themselves on another successful civilisation found. The Gate parameters were tweaked and then it was re-opened for this occurrence and an attempt at contact with the species on the far side made.

The Gate widened to around 300 metres in diameter and stopped. It was around 50,000 km from the surface of the world; far enough away to avoid any artificial satellites that may be in orbit, but close enough to allow for detection by the natives. Once the Gate was stable in size, one of the hundred metre wide Envoy craft passed through and into the universe on the far side.
Image
Unbeknownst to the culture on the far side, the Owners had been scanning the radio transmissions from this world for a while, and had already assembled a vocabulary of the majority language spoken. The Envoy ship halted relative to the Gate and the world beneath it about a hundred kilometres from the Gate behind it and broadcast a repeating signal on what the Owners had established was a little-used band, but easily accessible.

"Greetings to the people of Mikato, from the Owners of the Nexus. We come to you with peaceful intentions and wish to offer you participation in the Nexus, a multi-versal community of many races, species and civilisations. If you wish to discuss further, please decide who you wish to represent you and communicate on this frequency. Your chosen representative is cordially invited to visit the Nexus and see what is on offer. This offer is not time limited, and we will remain here until directed otherwise.

Once again, welcome to the Nexus."

"We can't just ignore the message!"

The Federal Council of the Mitaku Federation had convened a rather hasty meeting in the antechamber behind the Space Situation Room, which itself was now a bustle of activity, full of officers monitoring the situation both in space and on the planet. They had picked up a repeat of the broadcast from the Nexus vessel around ten minutes after the emergence when the lead communications officer, who had just resumed their station, had done a routine scan of all known frequencies.

The outburst had come from Jules Carve, the Security Guild Councillor, a red skinned male Mitaku.

"No, of course not," the softly spoken blue skinned elderly female Mitaku of the Science Guild, Mi Taeki, retorted. "But there's a difference between an aggressive action on our part and responding to a message of peace."

Jules leaned forward. "I don't see it as aggressive action if such an action is in the defense of our territory against alien invaders."

Mi snorted, a mark of derision in Mitaku culture. "Of course you wouldn't. I would see it as an unnecessary action against a message of peace. They've even gone to the trouble of appearing to us as a Mitaku in an effort to-"

Jules snorted back, louder than Mi had. "Or in an effort to deceive us!"

"Enough, you two," Atheh Orsihn, the purple skinned male Mitaku leading the Citizen's Guild, butted in. "I feel we have enough information to vote on the path."

A raise of hands quickly put the Science Guild's proposal of a peaceable first contact as the direction to proceed.

"Very good," Mi pulled her jacket. "I would still like a defensive escort for our first contact."

Jules nodded, more reserved in defeat. "I wouldn't expect otherwise."

"Great. I know just the person to initiate first contact as well," Mi stood, her communicator in hand.

* * * * *

Cassie Ekin was a prodigy. The youngest Mitaku to end up leading a department within SG Space, that of the search for alien life, when she had come up with a variety of different methods for helping to decipher various languages. Her research had already been used to decipher languages of the past that had previously been undecodable, and her interest in the stars had seen her pushed into the commanding the relatively tiny department.

As such, it wasn't long before she was walking down the corridors of the sub guild's headquarters towards the situation room having been flown in moments before, someone walking alongside her playing the video feed of the strange silvery Mitaku.

"So they've had this on repeat?" she asked.

"Yes," the reply came. "For about an hour now."

"Indeed. I bet they've wondered why they haven't had a reply."

"Oh they have had one," Atheh Orsihn was suddenly standing in front of her, and the group came to an abrupt halt. "Some random youngling found the feed and sent a silly reply back. We managed to shut it down pretty quickly, and luckily they seem to have ignored it for what it is."

Cassie's throat had gone a little dry. It wasn't very often you got to meet a member of the Federal Council up close, especially not the boss of your own Guild. "I... I see," she replied.

"Now you are here, let's get going," Atheh motioned. "We have left our guests long enough."

She lead the group into a small dimly lit room found just alongside the situation room. This was first time it had ever been used, and while kept clean and tidy, everything looked new and shiny, despite being years old. At the back of the room in a semi-circle sat eight chairs, each with a desk, with a number of stairs leading down to a central podium. In those chairs sat the Federal Council, each Councillor watching the group as it entered.

Atheh motioned Cassie towards the podium. "The stage is yours. We'll be here behind you, and I can't state enough how important this first contact is."

"Why am I doing this again?" Cassie queried, her voice a little croaky.

Atheh smiled warmly, and he placed an arm on her shoulder. "Because this is your department. First contact is your purview and you are the best Mitaku for this job."

Cassie just nodded, and moved to stand at the podium, only just noticing there were a number of other people standing there in military uniform. As she approached, a blue skinned female Mitaku dressed in the obviously higher ranked uniform offered her hand to Cassie.

"Hello there," she smiled at the scientist. "The name's Mote Pau. I've been assigned to you for personal security. If things go wrong, it's my job to ensure your safety as best as I can."

"Er... thanks," Cassie replied, taking Mote's hand, Mote's blue hand covering Cassie's red. "The name's Cassie... Cassie Ekin... I'm here to say hi to these aliens."

Mote smiled a knowing look at Cassie. "Yes, I know."

"Ah," Cassie took her hand back, and finished her walk to the podium. Taking a deep breath, and then another, she nodded at the purple skinned Mitaku mouthing at her if she was ready.

"3... 2... 1... "

The camera's started.

"Greetings Nexus. My name is... Cassie Ekin. I am the voice for the Federal Council of the Mitaku people, representing our world's interests to the Nexus, and have been selected as the...", she glanced down at the notes in front of her, "'chosen representative cordially invited to visit the Nexus and see what is on offer'. We request that you land your craft at the designated coordinates where I will be waiting to receive you."

Coordinates just south of the headquarters building on a large green field were then displayed along the bottom of the screen in a variety of different methods, each one clearly labelled in the Mitakan language.

"I look forward to our meeting," she hastily put a smile on her face as she finished her sentence, hoping the Nexus and the Council behind her weren't too fussed by her obvious nervous demeanour.

The group waited while the transmission found its way towards the craft, and awaited to see if a response would be forthcoming.

Gate 6429
Location: Stationary relative to main planetary body, 50k km distant
Status: Initial contact

The initial contact had confused the Owners on board on the Envoy vessel for a short while. Whilst consensus had established that the first reply received was not an official communication, some of the individuals had pointed out that official protocol clearly stated that the first contact made would be designated the official Client representation, regardless of the source. It took almost a whole second of conferring before the signal source was traced and established to be a juvenile, and not a member of any political, military or otherwise authority. A small minority back on Hub would probably still insist that this juvenile was still, technically, the Client representation, the Owners within this universe decided to wait for another, more legitimate, communication before confirming. When that first signal was abruptly cut off, it confirmed the consensus.

"Greetings Nexus. My name is... Cassie Ekin. I am the voice for the Federal Council of the Mitaku people, representing our world's interests to the Nexus, and have been selected as the... chosen representative cordially invited to visit the Nexus and see what is on offer. We request that you land your craft at the designated coordinates where I will be waiting to receive you.

"I look forward to our meeting."

Various smug signals were sent back and forth between the Owners as the 'real' first contact was made, with the location confirmed. The Enovy vessel remained stationary, as one of the twelve 'pods' detached from the mothership and quickly accelerated towards the planet with the silver-skinned Advocate within. The small craft, looking like a mirrored glass hemisphere ten meters across with a circular stepped pyramid base, traversed the intervening space in a matter of minutes and entered the atmosphere, trailing fire in its wake. It stopped suddenly at an altitude of around 1000 meters, and then decsended at a more measured speed towards the grassy space allocated. It halted with the base of the craft a few centimeters above the surface. The entire journey had taken about twenty minutes from the end of the Mitaku's message.

The mirror dome turned transparent, a doorway appeared, and a ramp extended from the body of the craft. The silver-skinned Advocate, looking far too thin for a Mitaku, and moving with an obviously artificial measured way, walked down and waited to be greeted.

"Quick," a voice hissed at the gathered group through the speakers. "They are landing what appears to be a shuttle pod!"

The small group around the podium jumped into action, the troops leading the slightly overwhelmed Cassie quickly through the corridors and out towards the designated landing zone. It appeared to Cassie that her superiors had been expecting some kind of verbal response, but once it became apparent that the Nexus representatives were simply just going to land and conduct the initial meeting on the ground, someone from the Situation Room had alerted the gathered group.

As they approached the landing zone, Cassie glanced up, half expecting to see a pinprick becoming larger. Instead, she saw the craft was actually much closer, having traversed from its starting position a lot quicker than expected. Given how secretive SG Space and the Federal Council were being about the sudden appearance of an alien species into their midst, the government media being told explicitly not to publish anything, she wondered how they were going to avoid this erupting through civilian channels. It was bound to be all over social media right now.

They all came to a stop and watched in awe as the final few moments played out, the craft touching down, turning transparent, and a ramp extending from a sudden doorway that appeared in the side. The strange silvery Mitaku drifted down from the craft and came to a stop, surveying the huddled group.

For a moment, there was just stillness. A cool breeze ruffled the grass. A call of some kind of bird echoed through the clearing, and the distant noise of vehicles making their way across roads was heard off in the distance.

"Well?" Mote's nudge broke Cassie's momentary paralysis. "It's your time to shine, honey."

Cassie took a deep breath and walked a few steps in front of the group.

"Hello!" she smiled. "Welcome to Mikato, the world of the Mitaku. I am Cassie Ekin, the representative of the Mitaku people."

Unaware to Cassie, but keenly aware to the Advocate's glance, a number of military tanks rolled quietly into position, guns readied at the craft and troops standing at their side, all standing by in case things turned sour.

If the Advocate had noticed the increase in military presence, it had deigned not to show it outwardly. Inwardly, the tanks had been noted, but dismissed as of little threat; unless the Mitaku were suddenly and uncharacteristically hostile, something the Owners had deemed statistically improbable, then there should be no attack. Besides, the weapons involved were probably relatively primitive and of minor inconvenience levels, rather than threatening.

As Cassie spoke, the Advocate smiled reassuringly in its best attempt at appearing welcoming. "Greetings, Cassie Ekin, the representative of the Mitaku people. I have been designated Advocate for your world by the Nexus Council and am here to offer you, and by extension, your world, participation as a Client of the Nexus. We acknowledge the profound implications this may have on your world and its culture, so offer you and your companions the chance to visit the Nexus first-hand before making the decision to accept the offer. Recording devices may be brought, if appropriate, and we are willing to offer any available information to your world whilst you are on your visit.

"As a Client of the Nexus, your world will have free and unhindered access to the Nexus, and the opportunity to trade and communicate with other Clients, who currently number nine hundred and eighty three, and, based on your level of cooperation and involvement, future opportunities to explore other universes and partake in the available resources there."

The Advocate gestured up the ramp to the interior of the Pod. "Please accompany me to the craft, where we will visit the Nexus. The trip should take less than four of your hours, and you have guarantees on your safety. The offer is not time limited and I will remain here, or at a location of your choosing, until a decision is made."

As the Advocate gestured towards the pod, Mote stepped forward to nudge Cassie into remembering their presence, but it was an unneeded action. Once the Advocate had finished speaking, Cassie motioned back towards the four Mitakan's standing behind her, clothed in military uniform and lightly armed with various handguns. One carried what appeared to be a communications device, which also had a built in camera, with the idea to record and stream the visit and transmit it, as much as they could, back to the Situation Room.

"Thank you for your offer. If you don't mind, I would like these four to accompany me on this trip. I am appreciative of your guarantees for our safety, and this is just to guarantee the sanity of my superiors."

Mote grunted in a stifled laugh as she imagined the faces on the Federal Council at that particular statement, but she couldn't have agreed more with it. It would look very bad if the Council had sent Cassie alone, and then she was killed or kidnapped. At least with this their image looked much better when presented to the public.

Leading the way, Mote and the three others came to stand next to Cassie, and waited to ensure that they would all be allowed to board.

The Advocate made a facial expression that came across as a frown made by someone who'd only ever seen other people frown, but never done it themselves. "The Nexus does not wish to affect the sanity of anyone, so if that is what is required, then it is acceptable." As Mote laughed, the Advocate turned the frown into a smile in one fluid movement. "Ah, humour. Excellent. Please follow me."

As soon as all the visitors had ascended the ramp, it slid back into the base of the craft and the opening through which they had just entered sealed silently. The flat, featureless floor lit up in a pattern which then morphed into a few bench-like seats and a central circular podium. "This craft, and others like it, are inertia-less, but we recognise that for most species, continued standing is often uncomfortable. However, you are free to sit, stand or walk around. the display in the centre will provide some information on the Nexus as we progress." The Advocate pauses. "If you require other biological functions, such as defecation, facilities can be made available. Please, just ask, and nutrition and liquids will be available once we reach the Envoy vessel."

The ground disappeared beneath them as the craft rose, moving from stationary to high speed in mere moments and without any sense of movement within. In about a minute, the world beneath stretched out and the sky turned from blue to black. The podium in the middle lit up with a 3-dimensional representation of the Mikato's star system. "As a Client with space-faring capabilities, you have been initially designated E4 status, but this is subject to a thorough audit by the Nexus Technology Board, once you agree to abide by the Law of the Nexus and your Client status is official. Your E4 status does not automatically provide you with a Mentor-Client, but if you wish for one, one may be assigned." The Advocate touched a panel on the podium and took a tablet-like object as it appeared. "This device functions similar to your computers and contains the text of the Law of the Nexus, and other information you may find useful. It will, in time, also provide a link to the Nexus Council and to my services, if I am not in the immediate vicinity. If you wish to embed these capabilities within your own computer networks, then this is possible, but we do not provide this without an official request, for client security purposes.

As the Mikato world grew smaller below the craft, the Enovy vessel and the circular shape of the Gate appeared and grew larger above them. "If you have any questions about anything that you see, or that is said, just ask," the Advocate said. "If it is within my ability to answer, I will. In a moment we will dock with the Envoy vessel and transfer to more spacious surroundings for our journey into the Nexus."

Two of their group sat. Cassie, Mote and one other, stood and watched the craft lift from the ground and hurtle out into space as easily as if they were travelling on a train across the countryside below. Mumbled thanks were offered to the advocate as they were offered refreshments, though no requests for any were given, and halfway up the third standing Mitakan pulled out a pair of glasses with a camera attached, put it on, then withdrew a pad of paper and started writing notes.

A few gasps were heard as they breached the atmosphere and their world stretched out below them. For all those present, it was the first time they were seeing it from orbit.

Mote came and stood next to Cassie. "Our terraforming efforts can really be seen clearly from up here."

Cassie nodded. "If you can count planting a few trees and bringing back species through genetic cloning 'terraforming'."

"I would," Mote pointed. "The Ariona forest looks rather sublime."

"As a Client with space-faring capabilities, you have been initially designated E4 status, but this is subject to a thorough audit by the Nexus Technology Board, once you agree to abide by the Law of the Nexus and your Client status is official. Your E4 status does not automatically provide you with a Mentor-Client, but if you wish for one, one may be assigned."

The group turned to examine the 3-dimensional model of the star system presented before them, a model that was well known to even the smallest Mitakan, but unseen through technology as advanced as the one shown before. The Advocate leaned over and withdrew a tablet-like device from within it.

"This device functions similar to your computers and contains the text of the Law of the Nexus, and other information you may find useful. It will, in time, also provide a link to the Nexus Council and to my services, if I am not in the immediate vicinity. If you wish to embed these capabilities within your own computer networks, then this is possible, but we do not provide this without an official request, for client security purposes."

"Thank you," Cassie took the device handed by the Advocate and began to thumb through the text, Mote's head perched above her shoulder. It wasn't too dense. Cassie had read the occasional legalise that had passed through the Science Guild's systems, but the whole situation of being on an official mission in an alien spaceship on the same day that they had discovered the existence of the Nexus was a bit overwhelming, and she soon gave up trying to understand the more detailed parts of the text.

"If you have any questions about anything that you see, or that is said, just ask. If it is within my ability to answer, I will. In a moment we will dock with the Envoy vessel and transfer to more spacious surroundings for our journey into the Nexus."

"Er yes," Cassie nodded. "A few questions. You mentioned mentorship? What exactly would a mentor do for us that we couldn't already? Also, I read in this," she waved the tablet-like object she had been handed, "that we are required representation on the Nexus Council? Would that involve someone living in the Nexus?"

The Enovy craft hung in space, in the exact same position it had taken when it arrived, seemingly quiet and unoccupied. the smaller pod craft approached, rotated around and slowed, connecting with the other ship almost seamlessly. A barely visible field extended out from a nearby doorway and connected with the field around the pod craft and the two connected, like bubbles merging on the surface of the water.

"Not all of the potential Clients we encounter have your levels of technology. Quite often they are significantly less developed. Advocates are here to provide access to Nexus services and as a guide to the opportunities it provides, we do not act as an intermediary between Clients with regards an exchange of knowledge or technologies. A Mentor typically assists less developed Clients in using the Nexus to their full potential, usually by providing supplementary technologies to allow for access, and providing networking with other Clients who would wish to trade." The Advocate explained. "A good Mentor would also guide a Client into proper procedures and behaviour expected of a Client. It is rare, but we occasionally make contact with potential Clients whose outlook towards outsider influence is less than ideal. As an Advocate, my neutrality prevents me from making judgements on actions or decisions that do not break the Law of the Nexus, a Mentor has no such restrictions and, so long as the independence of the Client being Mentored is upheld, they are free to assist or impede as needed. So long as the Law is upheld."

The Advocate walked out of the small pod and across a very exposed looking bridge and through a doorway into the Envoy craft. Inside was a large, open plan room, subtly alien in nature, but evidently designed for species of the same scale as the Mikato; furniture and fittings were of the right size and shape, but the aesthetics were dominated by a circular stepped pyramid motif.

"As a Client you would have the right to representation on the Nexus Council. This representation is not mandatory, although it is highly advised, and if you chose to have representation, any representatives would be required to remain within the Nexus as Council sessions run constantly. Who you chose for your representative, and how they are chosen is entirely your decision. The Nexus Council Board will determine how much representation you are allocated, based on population, technology and length of time as a Client, but it is typically between 3 and 5 representatives. The Council meets in our city, Hub, positioned at the centre of the Occupied Nexus. We will be travelling there once through the Gate.

"Also, once through the Gate, there are a number of existing Clients who wish to meet you, probably to continue with the efforts to convince you of the merits of Nexus participation, but also just as likely to meet a new species. If you do not wish to meet them, just say, otherwise I shall signal for them to join us shortly."
