A new world

Postby Xah » Tue Jun 07, 2016 2:47 pm

Hello all,

This is here for two main reasons; a place to keep all this stuff together online, so I don't have to shuttle it between the various places I might need it, and to get some measure of external opinion, so that I know if it's any good. Feel free to intersperse my posts with opinions, criticisms and suggestions as often as you like and ask questions. Alternatively, as it's nothing to do with Cynosure or NationStates, ignore it entirely, I don't mind.

Contents (will change as I add more stuff)

1) Divine Geneology - The interactions between the gods of this world are important to the plot and help explain most of the issues. As I have created a lot of gods and all the names are unfamiliar, this genology should help provide some context to the events that take place.

The types of Divine Beings

Postby Xah » Wed Jun 08, 2016 7:51 am

Primordials are beings of supreme power over both their aspect and much of the others within their 'family' (order or chaos). They have no base motives or emotions and view themselves as the sustainers of the cosmos, required to retain balance and existence.

Primae are all but omnipotent within their domain and their personalities are tinted with the aspect of their parent. All but one (Guta'cai)have a 'gender' as well, although this is little more than a feature that requires the input of two Primae to create as their power isn't enough singly. Guta is a special case.

Secondae are less powerful than Primae but still hold a great deal of power. This power requires a source however, unlike Primae who have residual power of their own. Secondae use the devotions and worship of humans and whatever power their Primae parents bequest them. Like Primae, they require a partner to create.

Tertae only have power within the area that is their aspect (which is either chosen, taken or granted), but this power is substantial. Creation is as random as human procreation in terms of numbers or gender. Require human devotions for power or the gift of a Primae or Primordial. Secondae cannot grant power.

Aeons are the children of Tertae and Quadrae with a human. Virtually human but have great charisma, stamina and fortitude. Natural leaders and gifted. Tend to perform best when in or around their divine parent's domain.

Primordials

Postby Xah » Wed Jun 15, 2016 8:36 am

Order family
Foret -
Aspect: Space, material plane, matter.
The creator of the universe, Foret is the embodiment of all that is fixed and tanglible. Retreated from most affairs after that initial creation and left the details to the other Primordials. Acknowledge as the creator, but never really worshipped.

Ryla -
Aspect: Death, ending
Embodies the end of all things, including the universe. Often placed in contrast to Foret as end to Foret's beginning. Little worshipped but recognised as a necessary climax

Baaku -
Aspect: Energy, power, sustainence
The prime mover, the source of all energy and sustainance. Whatever energy leaves, comes back. Has a very small, devout core of worshippers, but otherwise just seen as part of the greater pantheon.

Weilu -
Aspect: Law, rigidity, rules
Seen as the source of law and order, responsible for making sure the universe operates correctly and justice is served. Highly regarded where law operates, but less worship and more appeals to authority.

Chaos family
Pande -
Aspect: Life, growth, fertility
Creator of humanity and the world. Widely worshipped as the mother of most of the gods. Seen as caring and maternal and invoked often when appealing to her children.

Jonu -
Aspect: Strife, conflict, opposition
Acknowledged as necessary in the world. Does not create disorder through malice, but rather as a way for progression. Close to Pande (hunter/hunted, predator/prey) and worship is as part of the pantheon.

Caifa -
Aspect: entropy, decline, decay, inevitability
All things break down and end, order decreases. Seen as inevitable, but able to be resisted for a while. Often invoked along with Ryla in funeral rites as finally getting dues ("Caifa thirts, Ryla drinks")

Vilera -
Aspect: Time, progression, moments
The solitary and isolated keeper of time. Together with Foret seen as the two sustainers of the cosmos. Appeals for more time are common, but never granted.

Cosmology

Postby Xah » Fri Feb 24, 2017 12:20 pm

The various parts of the multiverse:

The void: Area outside of time and space, the emptiness that was before the universe and will be after it. Seen by the Primordials as their 'mother' but unknown to any other being.

The Aether
: Area in which the Primordials and Primae reside. Without bounds and calm. The physical universe can be seen and observed, but it's difficult to interact with. Any interactions requires great power and are seen by other Primordials as declasse and 'unfair' unless absolutely necessary.

The Afterlifes: The place where mortal souls reside after death. Almost impossible for the immortal gods to enter apart from the Keepers of the Dead. Vast and unchanging, the rules within are utterly the whim of their rulers.

The Underworld: a pit, created by the Primordials as a trash heap for failed creations. The abode of not only the imprisoned Usurpers, but all the monstrous and impossible creations that are too powerful, too evil or too disruptive to be allowed into the universe proper. Guarded by Sis'retyr, although occasional escapes do occur; usually with the assitance of Nexi.

The Universe: The physical, tangible universe. Any gods in this realm must obey its laws, although energy can be used to disrupt them. Gods have two forms in the universe; incarnate and ethereal. Their incarnate form is able to interact fully, but limited to a single place, even if their powers grant them omniscience. Whilst ethereal, they're capable of being anywhere within their aspect and far more powerful, but their affect on the physical world is more limited to their influences and the laws of the universe. It takes great energy to incarnate, although almost none to discorporate.

Pande's World: Often just called Pande, this is the world upon which the Primordials invested most of the creative power. Although humans were not a direct creation (evolved independantly) the gods soon realised that they were a special case and devotion from them gave power. The Primae accepted this, although realised they didn't require it; the Secondae meanwhile, grew strong on the worship of primitive humanity. After the Usurption, humanity was kept in a neolithic state of theocracy, directly ruled by the Usurpers. Innovation and growth of human independance was suppressed, although the population increased as wars and conflict were minimal. Vast monuments and megalithic structures were built. The Great War devastated humanity as both sides used massive human armies in their battles and the gods used their powers to the maximum. Technology levels leapt through the Bronze Age during the war as the Inheritors revealed previously forbidden knowledge to the humans. As such, once the war was won, humanity, although a fraction of its previous population levels, was on a much stronger footing. The asrise of Aeons also gave humanity much power, as most Aeons supported their human side. In the centuries after, humans developed themselves, creating large kingdoms and empires. Worship to the Inheritors is kept up, but there is little theocratic rule. Present technology levels are post-Iron age/early Medieval; engineering similar to that of Ancient Rome and Greece, but the look and feel of European feudal structures. Incarnations are rare, but do happen, especially at important coronations. Aeons are now exeedingly rare, perhaps only once or twice in a thousand years, usually when a god is tempted by a particulary strong/beautiful/unusual mortal. The presence of Aeons usually heralds a period of great change.

Primae

Postby Xah » Fri Feb 24, 2017 12:27 pm

All of the Primordials created at least one Primae aside from Foret and Vilera, who felt that their creation of the universe was sufficient. It was the creation of the Primae, fed from the worship of humans that caused the Primordials to lose their interest in the material world and retreat back into the Aether and quiet comtemplation.

Most of the Primae are little known outside of theological circles other than being the generation that Turbal overthrew. After their release from the Underworld, all but one of them retreated from the material plane. The exception being Nexi, the father of the Triplets of Strife, who still gains some measure of (forbidden) worship as part of the Children of Strife. Seen as the instigator of wars and conflict and largely decried by 'sensible' people.

Secondae

Postby Xah » Fri Feb 24, 2017 12:35 pm

The Secondae are the created offspring of two Primae (who were incapable of insingular creation like their parents). The sole exception is Tistal, whose parthenogenesis seems to be unique. All of the Secondae are well known in theological circles, with a few even entering into general worship. With the noteable exception of the Usurpers.

The Secondae took on more ordered and detailed roles, mainly specified by human belief, a force that had an even greater influence on their behaviour and temperments than on their parents.

Lords of Order:
Diyoth (Gioti and Mafe)
Myin and Moibus (Lalu and Reigo)

Diyoth is the elder and is joined by the twins Myin and Moibus. They are the final arbitrators of the cosmos and statues and veneration are common in court houses and legislatory bodies. Diyoth is seen as the judge of the Dead. Myin and Moibus advise him on the judgement as they know all laws.

Usurpers:
(Lieite and Siba's offspring)
Citiss
Sezend
Cosos
Rhaxet
Dayfod
Turbal
(Moibe and Tuko's offspring)
Lykith

The grandchildren of Pande, who schemed with the Children of Strife to imprison the Primae in the Underworld for millenia and allow Turbal and his siblings to rule the cosmos. Wildly perceived as fair but autocratic; life was simpler and safer but also oppressive and stifling. Their rule was ended by the children of Turbal who released the Primae from the underworld, casting the Usurpers down instead. Now used as an object lesson and the 'bad guys' in mythology. Turbal especially is seen as the ultimate in traitors and betrayers.

The Triplets of Strife:
Nexaki - Violence
Nexfite - Hate
Nexrura - fear

The embodiment of the worst of human attributes and assigned as the root behind all of humanity's ills. The offspring of Nexi's rape of Tuko. Worship is forbidden but still finds a place, Nexaki in particular amongst less-reputable soldiers (Jonu is the prefered warrior's god). Have avoided all punishment for their actions largely due to the protection of Nexi, who ensures they are never punished. Petty, malicious, ruthless, untrustworthy and every other perjorative given.

Others:

Tistal, the Teller, only creation of Guta. Sees all, tells little. Often uses her foreknowledge to encourage, warn and alter actions. Appears to both gods and humans, often with massive consquence. Forsaw the overthrow of the Usurpers and in telling Yastur, made it happen. Whilst she sees the future, has no memory of the past. Favourite of gamblers and divinators, it's rare that she intervenes on demand.

Zal'jon-weil, the Peacekeeper, child of Order and Chaos, the impossible one. Born from Nuico (law) and Saudo (strife) to prevent conflict between the gods after the Usurpers were defeated in a war that almost destroyed the world. Has the power to separate and enforce peace but has never used it, the threat is often enough. Bitterly resented by Nexi and his children who constantly seek a way to get around his powers. Worshipped as a distinct thing, apart from the main gods, by all in some way.

Tertae

Postby Xah » Fri Feb 24, 2017 1:00 pm

The Tertae, like their parents have two Secondae parents and appear to be the final generation of divine beings. With two singular exceptions, Tertae are not capable of creating offspring with each other, although they are capable of creating children with humans (called Aeons). The Inheritors are the main pantheon in the Empire and, as such, as most well known but the others all have their place.

Keepers of the Dead:
Lysek
Niynar
Doyom

Children of Diyoth and Myin, they protect the souls of the dead for eternity. Lysek in heaven for those who deserve eternal reward, Niynar in hell for eternal punishment, Doymor for the vast majority who just exist. Neutral and studious, worship of these gods is a quiet, sad affair. Prayers often given in the hope that a recently died loved one has gone to the right place.

The Inheritors

There were two main groups within the Inheritors, the children of Citiss and Sezend, whose existence were tolerated by Turbal, and the offspring of Turbal himself. The majority of his offspring were with his cousin Lykith, and were imprisoned at birth to prevent a prophecy from Tistal that stated Turbal's own children would overthrow him. However, seduced by his sister Rhaxet, two twins were born to Turbal who were hidden away and eventually proved to be his downfall.

Children of Citiss and Sezend
Taneb (the sea)
Mesoh (the earth)
Dicac (the sky)

These three, known as the 'Tri-hood', are considered the 'chief' gods through their all-encompassing domains, although interact little outside of that. Granted their power during the time of the Usurpers, they ultimately rebelled against their parents with the others as a way to free humanity. Apart from Dicac's partership with Sanul, they remain aloof.

Children of Turbal and Lykith
Yaltur
Seidtur
Zedtur
Lortur
Thuktur
Raeltur

Fought and won against the Secondae by securing the worship and prayers of humanity. Now gods of all things and given devotion where due. Yaltur and Hikis are worshipped together as the rulers of home and country and they are invoked by kings and in coronations.

Children of Turbal and Rhaxet
Sanul (weather)
Hikis (the home)

Whilst Sanul was portrayed in pretence as a son of Citiss and Sezend, Hikis rejected this perceived cowardice and appealed directly to Pande for the treatment of her half-siblings. They don't get on with each other; Sanul sees Hikis as a meddling romantic, Hikis sees Sanul as uncaring and obsessed with his standing with the Tri-hood.

Others
The two exceptions to the inability of Tertae to bear children with each other.

Leris, child of Sanul and Dicac, who is god of storms. Widely invoked by all and occupies a position as high as his parents and the other Inheritors. His creation is considered somewhat of a mystery and a result of human belief.

Sis'retyr, child of Doyom and her uncle, Moibus. He guards the entry to the underworld where once the Primae were imprisoned and now the Usurpers. Has been granted vast power over his domain by all the Primae, who are also suspected of having a hand in his creation.
