Amélie's eyes lit up behind her shades at the mention of a high street. She wanted to see more of Ukaristi fashion, but being able to freely shop was even better. It took significant effort on her part to refrain from squeeing, effort that did not go unnoticed by Vivienne who giggled quietly to herself. Coughing to recollect herself, Amélie

"Perhaps we should start in the third ring so I can ...um...get better acquainted with the culture."

It sounded convincing to her, but Amélie was content with whatever Renata decided to draw from her own reaction. The time for politik could wait for a bit, for now she had a new goal. As she walked towards the first clothing store she found, Vivienne walked next to their host, her ears flicking from the amount of background noise.

"If you do not mind the intrusion, I am curious about you. Wustesche lacks a proper nobility these days, and Perleninsel is still trying to assemble ours. How did you come into your current position? And what role do you see those of your position playing in the lives of the people they serve?"

The Chauvesouris' voice was soft and polite, and other than her discomfort in the public setting her body didn't give much insight into her thoughts.
Sometimes the world needs to BURN so it can grow.

Renata took a moment to contemplate the question presented to her, before answering.

"The nobility of the Ukaristi states was and is in a different situation depending, of course, in the specific state in question. Those who still had some form of monarchy had all retained it in a titular form, with the titles become more and more based on merit than birth-right. Democratic states such as this one were either phasing them out by the time Ukari was born, or they were already history. The fore is true for Schleswig-Holstein; any remnant of feudalism reeks of inefficiency in many modern minds.

When the Kaiserin decided to revive the nobility in all but one of her states, care was taken not to blow the move out of proportion. Critics would obviously point out the potential autocratic utility of the additional class, and the backward systems we had traditionally represented.
The recently deposed nobles, such as myself, were quick to rally behind this. In this state, the whole affair of removing our titles was not particularly pretty... But more importantly, she had very new ideas for the class, both to justify our existence, and to make us far more useful to the state and the people.

There is almost a debt each noble needs to repay to society for their privileges. This defaults to the governance of their titular domain, but in most cases you will find we have a lot of merits as individuals, with this also being one of the requirements for any new noble lineages or bestowing of titles. Therefore we can also repay society by holding a decent job. Those who don't perform well... I can only assume they will lose the rights.

But in my case, I was designated for military service by my parents whilst they designed me. This city council is designed so that I am not necessary, so that I may instead contribute to the country by serving in the Kriegsmarine..."

She did miss the whole idea of her position and its influence on lives in her dialogue, instead talking of her work on the national level...
Reaching the entrance to the first store, it did occur to Segeberg that she may appear somewhat out-of-place in her uniform...
Well. At least it was fashionable.
Remarkable attention was paid toward making the military uniforms of the Ukaristi armed forces perfect... At least, to a Ukaristi fashion sense.

This store was an independent sole trader, like most apparel stores of Ukaristi states today. Backlash against foreign clothing multinationals following their crushing of the major Baltscandzic chains had pushed all non-Scandzic stores out again, and with them, a great deal of any taste for the fashions they had brought.
After some pursuit of the traditional way - with small independent stores in every town - Ukarist was formed, and with that came a new idea; Ukaristi fashion. A blend of the styles found only within the borders of the Union - new and yet familiar to all - this new wave had quickly spread throughout the market, which strangely seemed to have lost its competitive edge in terms of expansionist entrepreneurs.

What was on display, therefore, would mostly be representative of Ukaristi fashion as a whole... a noticeable constant in such a diverse Union of states.

With it still being early in the year, fashion designed with minimum cold resistance would be the most available. In Ukaristi terms, that meant still wearing tight, and often rather short clothes, but at least with the addition of coats, scarves, tights, and warmer boots.
Whilst foreigners may well be offended by some of these Ukaristi fashion traditions, the trend for revealing clothing had developed in the past 200 years, along with better clothing materials. Add this to a natural affinity to the cold, and it became possible to stand the temperature of the North in an amount clothing previously deemed insufficient. By this day and age, a Southern Ukaristi would only have to ensure she covered most of herself with at at least 1 layer during the colder months. Bare skin would be shown more and more as weather improved...

"Willkommen..."

The tailor peered over the rims of her glasses toward the door, as the entry bell rang, her face otherwise still fixed toward the holographic emitter on her desk...
And to her surprise, a foreign face had arrived. She excitedly pulled her glasses off, pocketing them in her shirt, before hurrying over with a smile.

"Moin Mòjn* - your first time here? Ja - Fantastisch. How can I help you today? Perhaps you would care to take a look at our latest selection of coats? Skirts? Shirts? Or I can get you measured up right away, if you're looking for that better fit..."

She enthusiastically produced a measuring tape as she said that, before giving Amélie any chance to respond.
It was very popular - and very fashionable - for a Ukaristi to have her clothes custom measured to fit; so that they would be made tight, and so that they would therefore show off her body shape and curves. But otherwise, standard sizes were available, usually for browsing purposes.

"Hmmm...it seems that efficiency can solve any problem. If it is acceptable with you, I will relay this insight with my mistress. I feel that she may be balancing out the matters of nobility in terms of morality, rather than the method you've described. I believe the term to describe her approach is 'optimistic', and while it is noble I do not believe the response from the 'established' nobility has earned them such kindness."

Vivienne's voice darken rather subtly, her expression tensing up under the bandages that covered her gaze. She was silent, and after a moment the tension in her body seemed to fade as quickly as her mood had shifted.

"Thank you for your advice on these matters. I find your perspective rather refreshing."

Amélie thought about the options, and decided that with the time she had, getting fit would probably use most of it. However, she was content with the experience in this lone store, since it would be more memorable anyhow. Smiling at the tailor, the princess nodded.

"Oui s'il vous plaît, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. I was hoping for a more complete outfit, given that I will be in this region for an while."

There was a certain degree of familiarity with this store, most likely due to the nature of Perleninsel businesses. There were very few corporate chains operating within the atoll nation, with the general populace showing far more preference for smaller local businesses. It was likely that as time pushed forward, this trend would fade, but for the moment the people of Perleninsel were set on defending the 'artisan economy'.
Sometimes the world needs to BURN so it can grow.

"Acceptable? That is merely how the Kaiserin has arranged things.
If your Princess wishes to imitate that, I'm sure you'd be complementing her ideas..."

Renata entered the shop, exchanging a nod of greeting with the tailor, before moving deeper inside; apparently browsing.

The tailor was clearly occupying her attention with Amélie.

"Hmm. What exactly are you looking for? Something formal, something casual, something for work?..."

The measuring didn't take long, with the tailor merely having to see the measurements using the tape whilst noting them into the cybernetic memory.

"And if it's a full outfit you are looking for, I can take your shoe size, and we can organise for some matching footwear too..."

It was common for there to be some collaboration between the small Ukaristi stores. They were quite specialised in many cases (although this one stocked a variety on the wider side), but this could be overcome and used to their advantage through the ability to sell each other's products in business collaborations. This store, for example, wouldn't produce footwear itself, and was instead partnered with a separate store which did. It was merely a question then of sharing certain styles and communicating the orders to each other.
Of course, this was slightly slower and slightly more expensive than the bulk clothes wear centres of other nations, but it served as a guarantee for quality, let customers feel happy in sourcing locally, and furthermore allowed for limited economy of scale in production.
