An experiment with numbers

Postby Xah » Fri Dec 09, 2016 6:20 pm

So, as many of you might've noticed, I'm a bit of a sucker for numbers, statistics and all manner of exciting data manipulations. Yes, I know, its nerdy, bear with me.

What I'd like is for as many people as possible to rank their nation(s) in the following metric from 1 to 8. I'll provide a brief explanation as to what I consider each rank to be equivalent to as well. If you don't think your nation fits on the scale, or the description doesn't fit the rank, just say and I'll adjust it. I'll include an example for Xah at the bottom (cos we all know Xah is such a typical nation, yah?)

Land area is a bit of a weird one, as the current map rules give every nation approximate equal area, but consider it as a 'useable land area' or a proxy for population density.
The metrices (and explanations):

Maximum Population:
1 5,000,000
2 15,000,000
3 50,000,000
4 100,000,000
5 250,000,000
6 500,000,000
7 1,000,000,000
8 5,000,000,000

Land use
1 <10% - Majority of land unusable for any purpose due to climate, terrain or other circumstances.
2 11-20% - Large areas manageable. Limited arable or pastural farming possible. Urban spread restricted
3 21-30% - Still some significant geographical barriers. Potential for limited use using heavy geo-engineering
4 31-40% - Sustainable agriculture possible on an intensive level, towns and cities can spread
5 41-50% - Typical usage limits for nations without advanced land management or geo-engineering
6 51-60% - Space available for deliberate non-productive use, less intensive farming or suburban spawl.
7 61-70% - Good geo-engineering in place, most areas are available for urban growth, farming or resource extraction
8 >70% - Excellent land management in place, abundance of land available.

Relative scientific advancement (relative to regional setting ie post-modern)
1 Severly under-developed, modern tech rare and confined to military
2 Some access to modern technology, upper-class better equipped. Military has limited numbers of key pieces
3 Tech levels low, but regionally comparable, especially military
4 Majority of population has access to mainstream technology, military slightly more advanced
5 Limited access to higher technology levels amongst wealthy and military
6 Widespread access to top of the range tech, majority of military well equipped
7 Ubiquitous use of advanced technologies in all levels. Military general access to top levels of tech
8 All levels of population seamlessly integrated with high technologies. Miltiary regarded as most advanced

Cultural influence ('soft power')
1 Unknown to all but niche scholars
2 Avante garde artists may reference, general knowledge low
3 Some small influence on minor aspects
4 Counter-cultures often pick up on aspects, some bleeding into mainstream awareness
5 Mentioned or used in everyday awareness, even if influence is limited
6 Large producer of cultural artifacts. General population fully aware
7 Widespread influence of not only pop-culture but history and language
8 Major contributor to an era's culture. Responsible for other nations' own culture

Governmental Authority (within own borders)
1 Little or no overall control. Total anarchy. Warlord rule
2 Some control over central regions or Civil war.
3 Good control over capital and outlying areas. Outer regions passive but uncooperative
4 Widespread acknowlegment of de-facto government control, large regions of semi-autonomy
5 Unified nation but with popular sepratist movements. Poor distribution of state infrastructure
6 Cohesive nationality, good spread of infrastructure
7 Popular support for authority, limited dissent, excellent infrastructure
8 Little to no dissent, governmental control total and pervasive

Economy
1 No organised economy, widespread poverty, income vulnerabilites common
2 Urban areas have some relatively wealthy districts, majority of workforce subsistence or worse
3 Some internal trade on an ad-hoc level, emergent middle-class. Still large areas of poverty
4 Internal economy complex but little to no exports. Average income levels low
5 Some exports, vastly outweighed by imports. Economy still vulnerable to external forces
6 Large middle-class, export/import balance marginal. Affluent urban areas
7 Large and complex economy. Export focused with a multi-faced approach.
8 World-class economy, strong securities in place. Little or no poverty

State efficiency
1 No organised tax collection, widespread corruption, poor governmental infrastructure
2 Some taxes, largely off-set by corruption. Central bank mainly used for embezzlement
3 Established tax regime. Corruption common and expected. Poor system of collection and distribution
4 Taxes paid regularly, corruption prosecuted but infrequently, good infrastructure
5 Well organised taxation and distribution, corruption levels low
6 Advanced and progressive taxation at all level. Corruption almost unheard of.
7 Bureaucracy limited and efficient, no tax evasion, streamlined government
8 Almost perfect system, little to no waste, taxes fully paid up by all contributors

Environment
1 No environmental safeguards. Widespread industrial pollution. Severe and almost irreversible
2 Some protection given for wealthy-only parks. Superficial acknowledgement of polluted areas as an issue
3 Designated areas with protections. Some industrial regulation. Minor efforts made for clear up
4 Extensive park system. Industrial regulation is strong but mainly political. Clean up measures under funded
5 Most rural areas outside of extraction sites protected. Industry faces significant regulation
6 Urban areas have environmental regulation. Waste management is commonplace
7 Recycling is the norm, urban areas largely free from pollution. Industry integrated into environment
8 Minimal impact on natural environment. All energy sources are renewable. Little to no landfill.

So, as an ammendment to the above, a ranking system has been determined. This is still alpha testing, so comments and suggestions welcome.

Instead of ranking 1 to 8, you decide what kind of 'power' your nation is, based on how you RP it, your factbook and so on. This gives you a pool of points to distribute between the indicators. Additionally, there's an optional 'special' category you can pick that gives defined bonuses on specific indicators. There is still a cap of 8 on each and a minimum of 1.

Power bands
Super - 45
Great - 40
Regional - 35
Small - 30

Specials
Tech: +2 Sci, +1 Env, -1 Gov
Cultural: +2 Cult, +1 Env, -1 Eff
Military: +2 Gov, +1 Sci, -1 Cult
Industry: +2 Eco, +1 Eff, -1 Env
Energy: +2 Eff, +1 Sci, -1 Cult

To continue with Xah as an example:

Power band: Regional (35 points)
Special: Energy (+2 Eff, +1 Sci, -1 Cult)
Population: 4
Land Area: 1
Science: 7 (+1)
Cultural: 1 (-1)
Government: 8
Economy: 7
Efficiency: 5 (+2)
Environment: 2

Starting with everything at 1 and adding points seems to make me a great power and not a super power. Yeah! Not a supah powah!

Just your average friendly neighborhood Xeno that dropped out from the skies that happened to have displaced a technologically focused Imperialist Nationstate.

Well we're just shy and scared in this place. We're just fish out of water from the cosmos. You can see the trip has left us tired and drained so how about you be a pal and give us your Industrial Capacity? We can give you many shiny rocks. You may know them as "Gems" and "Transition Metals."

When pictures look alive, with movements free. When ships, like fishes swim beneath the sea. When men, outstripping birds, can soar the sky. Then half the world deepdrenched in blood shall die....
