The Kingdom of Mycorria

The Kingdom of Mycorria is a middle-sized feudal monarchy set in the valley of Helvetica, in the Alpian Mountains. With an established culture stretching back thousands of years, the Mycorrians pride themselves on their independent nature and their ability to create a strong nation from the typically inhospitable terrain around them. Once the centre of a continent spanning Empire, these days the Mycorrians are content to participate in the wider community as a smaller partner and leave their glory days behind them. Whilst a strong exporter of raw materials such as lumber, metal ores and stone, the nation imports a lot of its grain, and is often cut-off in the winter months. Whilst not openly isolationist, the Mycorrians are notoriously introverted; visitors who make the trip to the nation are given enough hospitality as is expected, but are not encouraged to stay. What is not known, even by most inhabitants of Mycorria, is that the nation is a puppet state; a necessary front by deeper and far more unusual powers, who maintain the front as a guard against darker threats.

The Kingdom of Mycorria: History

Post by Xah »

History

Official History
Over two thousand years ago, the lands now occupied by the Kingdom were once a part of the Helvetican Empire, whose lands extended far beyond the current borders of Mycorria. Helvetica was large, ancient, powerful, and ruled a tribute empire by dint of its well trained, professional armies. Wealth flowed into the lands, and the Emperors of the day could see no end to their mighty empire; its neighbours were pacified and a Pax lay across the lands.

When the Helvetican Empire collapsed, it was due to a number of factors, most notably a plague that decimated the Empire's heartlands and centre of government, leading to most of the tributary nations breaking off and going independent. Without the might of its armed forces to prevent it, Helvetica shrank to not much more than its current borders in barely a decade, with the population of the once powerful nation a fraction of its previous glory.

Within fifty years, the ruling aristocracy was overthrown by a new order, who renamed the area 'The Kingdom of Mycorria' and engaged in a largely successful process to remove all legacy of the previous imperial state. Using its geographical location to its advantage, Mycorria all but disappeared from significant history for several hundred years; the once great imperial centre, now a rural backwater, disregarded by most for its lack of anything important. Trade flowed; the lands were still rich with resources, and the world had need of ores and wood, but the people are not very gregarious, and the roads to Mycorria not well travelled.

For all intents and purposes, Mycorria is stable and productive; its ruling dynasty has held the throne since the country's inception, a remarkable feat in itself, and it has largely distanced itself from the politics and intrigues of the wider world. Visitors speak of a polite, yet introverted people, with their own unusual customs and way of life, and of a landscape that whilst superficially similar to the world around it, seems to have more than its fair share of unusual occurrences.

Real History
The actual history of Mycorria is far more disturbing than the history books describe. When the end of the Empire came, it was not from without, or even from within, but from beneath. Only read if you wish to know the truth about Mycorria, and can keep OOC knowledge separate.

The Kingdom of Mycorria: Geography

Post by Xah »

Geography
Physical
Mycorria occupies the Casle river valley, approximately 1500 kilometers long and 500 kilometres wide, bordered by the largely impassable Alpian Mountains, with a well-travelled pass to the north, and much less accessible passes in the south and east. It mainly consists of taiga forests (the middle of the valley are more deciduous), with the mountaintops being more desolate mountain tundra, and even a couple of glaciers. The lower parts of the country are around 1000 meters above sea level, with the altitude at the highest town at about 4700 meters. Within the borders of Mycorria is the highest peak in the world, Redhore at over 8700 meters, the active volcano, Pfalhiem, and the impressive Ihweilernach and Kipesenese waterfalls.

Geology
The Alpian mountains contain a wealth of natural resources, and Mycorria is a prominent exporter of much of them. Salt, copper, iron and tin are amongst the valuable materials found in its rocks, and the forests provide a good source of lumber.

Climate
Mycorria enjoys short, warm summers with regular rainfall, but the winters are long and bitterly cold, with most of the country covered in thick snow that prevents substantial travel. In the spring, the Casle river is also prone to flooding due to snowmelt, and the mountain valleys are notorious for their avalanches.

Environment
The wildlife in Mycorria is similar to that of the rest of the Alpian mountains, with sheep, goats and alpine cattle grazing on the lower slopes. Wolves and bears are not unknown, but hundreds of years of hunting have reduced populations severely, as with the population of wild herbivorous species such as deer and elk.

The Kingdom of Mycorria: Religion

Post by Xah »

Society

Mainly due to its geographical isolation, but also as a deliberate attempt to distance itself from an imperial past, Mycorria has a unique society carefully crafted to keep the population happy in the face of necessary evils. Religion is an important aspect of every inhabitant's lives, which is focused around one's family and village, outsiders find it difficult to integrate into Mycorrian society, which is just how they like it.

Religion

Mycorrians follow a religion known only as The Tenets, a list of commands they believe were given to them by someone known as The Prophet. the Tenets govern a person's attitude to life, and how one should act if their death and afterlife are to be successful. Associated with The Tenets are traditions that have arisen, and the four main festivals of Beginning, Provision, Collection and Submission.

Beginning - A typical new year style festival, held on the spring equinox, to celebrate survival of the winter. Supplies now deemed in excess from the winter stores are enjoyed, and the year ahead in planned with regards sowing and breeding of livestock. The festival where Mycorrians are somewhat less inhibited as normal and is often a time when family groups re-bond and welcome new members.

Provision - At the summer solstice it is traditional for the nobility to hand out gifts to their commoners, typically from stocks that have proven particularly productive so far. Breaks from the payment of rent for tenants, and other financial rewards are also granted. New births that have occurred in the past year are registered and added to local census records.

Collection - Celebrated at the autumn equinox, and signifies the last collection of the harvest and beginning of the winter months. Food that will not last the coming season is finished off (particularly meat from slaughtered animals and fruit not set aside for preservation), and firewood and winter provisions are stocked up. Allocation of one's family group for the winter is also decided, if anyone has mixed loyalties from the summer.

Submission On the winter solstice, regardless of the weather, everyone gathers in their local temple where the selection of the annual sacrifices are made. Strictly forbidden for outsiders to know about, a single pot meal is prepared for the whole gathering, typically a meat and vegetable stew. An equal portion of the meal is given to everyone present, regardless of rank, and one portion will contain a magic bead, indistinguishable from the rest of the meal. Once eaten, the lights are doused and the person whose meal it contained will be visible by a pale green glow. That person is then celebrated and their family rewarded with gifts (notably six months rent free), and at midnight, the person is led away to the secret heart of every temple, never to be seen again.

The Kingdom of Mycorria: Species

Species

Mycorrians: The dominant species in Mycorria, Mycorrians are a standard human species, nominally a sub-class of the Helvetican racial group, with little to no distinguishing differences from the basic humans found on the planet. Their higher altitude home lands have given them an above average blood oxygen capacity and larger lungs, and their skin, typically a pale olive in colouration, is often weathered with the signs of the local climate. Blue eyes are common, but there is a strand of darker eye colours that is more prevalent in the south of the country. They tend towards an introspective nature, taciturn with strangers but friendly and open with those they count as kin. There is a slight difference between the nobility and commoners, mainly from the better diet and availability of medical treatment for the upper classes, with nobles being somewhat taller on average, but more prone to illness and disease.

The Kingdom of Mycorria: Government

Government

Mycorria is a feudal monarchy; the king is, legally, the owner of the entire lands of Mycorria, and essentially rents it out in exchange for loyalty and a portion of the revenue from the lands. In turn, these lords rent out the land to lesser lords, and so on down a chain, until at the very end are the peasant, who work the land in exchange for a subsistence level of income. The only exceptions to this process are the capital city, Richtenlug, and the main trading centre with the rest of the continent, Shaplochen, who have manged to wrest some measure of independence from the system and are beholden to the monarch only.

Konig
The ruler of Mycorria is determined by heritance under patrilineal primogeniture; the eldest recognised male child of the previous monarch becomes ruler once the previous one dies. Despite it being patrilineal, there have been a few instances where an unmarried female has held the title due to a lack of suitable male heirs. Once married however, the husband assumes authority.

The dynastic line from the original founders of Mycorria has remained almost unbroken in 1500 years with a single exception, about 1100 years prior to the present day, it was feared the line had died out, until a single bastard child was discovered. Since then, great measures have been taken to ensure dynastic succession, including the allowance of multiple Royal wives, Royal Divorce, and the legitimacy of bastards.

The current monarch is Jugen the Third, also called Jugen the Diplomat, due to his efforts to increase Mycorria's standing in the wider world. The presence of the Nexus Gate no doubt has something to do with this. Jugen has five children, to two wives, the first having died during childbirth of the first born. He is reasonably well liked by his subjects, but there is an undercurrent of unrest in his more fundamentalist followers, who see this increased interaction with the outside world as going against the Tenets.

Herzog

Directly under the monarch are the Herzog, a hereditary rank who owe fealty to the Monarch. Although in practice the title can be taken away due to disloyalty and awarded to another, this has never happened in the history of Mycorria. There are 5 Herzog, each controlling one of Mycorria's Cantons (with Richtenlug sitting separate). Like the monarchy, Herzog practice patrilineal primogeniture, unlike the monarchy, there have been times when a dynasty has expired, and a new one appointed to the province.

Herzog are granted absolute power over their Cantons, so long as they keep up their tax obligations to the monarch, and abide by whatever Royal Decrees are issued. Additionally, they are obliged to provide a military force if so demanded, and must attend a biennial parliament called the Landsraad. This power granted to them also includes the appointment of their own vassals and partitioning of the land. The number of sub-divisions varied greatly; the smallest, Gufen has half a dozen, with Kipesen having almost twenty.

Ritter
Mycorria's Cantons are divided up into Manors, each one governed by a Ritter, who is granted that title by their Herzog. Like all other ranks in Mycorria's feudal system, the title was hereditary, although exchange of Manors and titles occurred more frequently at this level as a way for Herzogs to manipulate the loyalty of the people under them. Ritters were entitled to a portion of the land's revenues, and to appoint their own vassals to manage the land under them, although their Herzog had the right to determine law and retained military control of the area. Ritters were responsible for the judiciary of their Manor, sitting as judges in trials, and as such tended to move around the Manor, settling in one place for a season.

Bauer
The lowest rung of Mycorrian society are the bauers, or peasants, who, with a few exceptions, do not own the land upon which they work. They perform all of the manual tasks in Mycorria; farming, mining, trading, crafting, low-level administration, and providing service to the local lord. A bauers profession is typically hereditary, with children taking over their parent's work. Villages form the core of bauer structure, with the village and local area ran by edlars, retired, relatively wealthy freibauers (see below) who rule on minor legal issues and determine who is to be picked if and when the local Ritter demands soldiers or a temporary workforce.

Occasionally, a bauer family will own the land upon which they work, typically as a reward at some point in the past of the family, and granted by a Herzog. Such bauers are also known as freibauer, and are exempt from local conscriptions and pay their taxes directly to the Herzog, although they are still considered subjects of the local Ritter with regards fealty and law. This makes them slightly more well-off than most bauers. There is often contention between freibauers and Ritters, and most freibauer are careful to maintain good relationships with the Herzog, upon whom they rely on for protection.

Gothi
The last part of Mycorrian hierarchy are the Gothi. Not a hereditary position, Gothi are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the temples to the Tenets and generally consist of bauers without any other profession or land to work, and the children of nobles not given an official title. Gothi are held apart from normal society and whilst afforded a high level of respect, are somewhat shunned from normal social activities. Part of the Ritter's taxes are granted to the temples for their upkeep, but the amount varies considerably, with most being on mere subsistence levels.

Overview
Richtenlug is the largest town and capital of Mycorria, as well as the centre of government, home to the Royal Family and site of the largest Temple to the Tenets. Once much larger and the seat of an Empire, the fields and forests around are still littered with the ancient ruins and structures of that by-gone era. The town sits in a sheltered valley, in the middle of a large deciduous forest, surrounded by fields, and is free of most of the worst weather that afflicts most of the country, although the roads leading out are rendered virtually impassable in the winter months.

Governance
Richtenlug is one of only two place in Mycorria that are under direct rule of the monarch and not under the rule of a Herzog, the other being the trading town of Shaplochen, fifty kilometers downstream. Whilst the monarch could excise direct authority, in effect the town is governed by a council of Burgomasters, representing the most powerful families in the area. The town, and its inhabitants, are exempt from conscription and other such duties, although the council will offer up some of its poorer residents from time to time, in order to clear out the rabble.

Economy
As the natural meeting point for all the roads in Mycorria, Richtenlug is an important trading centre, second only to Shaplochen, where the goods of the nation are traded with outside parties. Raw materials stream into the city from the outlying towns and are bartered in the large central marketplace before either being shipped off down the river, or to one of the many craft workshops in the town. Smelters, lumber mills and black-smithies are all common in the town, with their produced goods often following the raw materials downstream. The lack of taxes paid to a Herzog help with the wealth in the city, although the monarch does take a cut of the town's profits.

Religion
The Temple to the Tenets in the town is the biggest in all of Mycorria and reputed to be the place where the Prophet first created them. Despite this, the town is much more secular than the rest of the country, thanks to its milder climate, with only Submission still drawing in the public on a regular basis. During Submission, almost the entire town can fit into the temple for the ritual meal, with only a few satellite temples in other parts of the town required. As expected from the most prominent settlement in Mycorria, the number selected during Submission is also proportionally higher, with up to a dozen individuals being selected every year.
