The Federation of Xah

The Federation of Xah is the sole representative of a Terran-like world whose ecosystem has been in an ice age for the last three hundred years. Isolationist, even to the other cultures on their own world, they have mastered the techniques of genetic manipulation and practice a tightly controlled form of eugenics to ensure their population remains stable and compliant. The Xahian Warrior caste is particularly note-worthy, being the result of hundreds of years of selective breeding and genetic manipulation, and are marketed across the Nexus as superlative mercenaries.

History

It wasn't man-made climate change that brought about the end of the world, but it certainly didn't help that the planet's ability to handle changes was damaged by human activites. Short-sightedness over space programs meant that there was no escape when asteroid plummeted through the atmosphere and smashed into the crust. Billions died almost overnight. Billions more in the weeks and months that followed, when the sun was obscured in a haze of dust and cloud. The Endless Winter followed, a result of a world incapable of recovery and saw the ice caps swell and the continents enveloped in a shell of snow and ice.

Humanity survived however. Almost all civilisation was gone, the majority of the remnants reduced to scavenging bands on the equator, fighting over relics of the past and the meagre food that could still be grown. A few exceptions existed. The old world naval forces that survived the initial tsunamis banded together and formed Freeport, a metropolis of old ships jammed together and now a hub of trade and civilisation. A section of the now temperate tropics is now home to a large community of 'uplifted' animals in a city-state known as New Haven. But by far the largest of the surviving civilisations is the Federation of Xah, a network of isolationist, hive-like cities in the ice of the north, who jealously guard their advanced technologies, only occasionally venturing out to remind the world they exist and to gather materials for their gene projects.

It was the Federation of Xah alone, with their castes and gene-enhanced warriors, who managed to secure Client status with the Nexus, to make contact with a wider community

The Castes

Leader
The leader caste provides the oil in the great Xahian social machine. Diplomats, managers, administration and government; the leaders permeate all castes and all levels, providing guidance and management to all the other castes. Advised by the best, the leaders ultimately have the final say, and reap the consequences should they decide wrong. Right at the top, a council of all the caste leaders advise a triumphrate of Xahian leaders who guide and control all of Xah.

Warrior
Being born into the warrior caste is to live a life of endless drills, practice and combat. Bigger and stronger than other Xahians, they are bred to be as fit and agile as possible. By the time they reach full growth, a warrior stands on average at 2.2 meters tall, by the time they enter full service at age 21, most are also heavily augmented with implants and prosthetics. Often considered lower in intelligence, this is only true of the majority designated as foot soldiers. Those who test well and aspire to leadership and special forces are considered some of the brightest Xah has to offer. Whilst most warriors are tasked with hive defence and policing and escorting Xahian diplomats and traders, a sizeable number are also hired out as mercenaries, their size and skill highly valued.

Technical
A single minded devotion to the pursuit of science and its application for the greatness of Xah; that is what being a Technical means. The Technical caste are Xah's scientists, medics and teachers, and are unique in Xah's strict genetic purity in that they scour the world for the best minds, paying large sums of money for their genetic material. It is the minds of Technical who designed the vast hive cities, plan their genetic charts and keep Xahian science at the forefront of their world.

Engineer
Builders and crafters beyond compare, the practical minded engineers are responsible for the making and maintenance of the technology that keeps Xah alive and successful. From the Hive Cities to the hydroponics, from tanks to spacecraft, engineers are behind it all and Xahian culture would crumble without them. Almost as strong as the warriors, engineers don't value pure physical strength as much as patience and an eye for detail. Rarely seen outside of the Federation aside from when natural disasters strike and Xahian engineers will be at the forefront of rebuilding efforts.

Farmer
When it comes to growing food from nothing, the farmer caste have it wrapped up. Utilising the best hydroponic techniques invented and ensuring that nothing produced in the hives is wasted, the farmers grow all the food and tend the vast meat vats that feed the Xahian population. Priding themselves on sustainability and quality, farmers are found in every hive and accorded a level of respect only the Mothers can match.

Mother
The smallest caste, but by far the most important, all Xahains are born of the Mothers. Essentially living baby factories, a mother can be expected to live in almost perpetual pregnancy for their working lives, with the most prolific Mothers enduring 25 or more births in their life. Given the best Xah has to offer, Mothers are revered and held in high esteem by all levels of society; a status due to them because of their unique position.

Worker
To be assigned to the Worker caste is the knowledge that your genes failed; that through no fault of your own, the caste to which you were born has deemed you unsuitable to add to their collective genes. Whilst this might seem a devastating blow, Xahians are conditioned from an early age that this outcome is not uncommon, that only the best go on to make their caste of birth and that being assigned as a worker is not punishment; it's expected. Acceptance into your caste is a bonus for exemplary behaviour. Despite this, it is common for those made Workers to be exhibit some measure of disappointment; from mild depression, to angry denial all the way to outright dissent. A major role for Xahian psychologists is to integrate new Workers into their role, to ensure that they remain productive members of society. Most Workers accept their position and progress through the ranks of their role in the same way any other caste member does, albeit without the chance of their genes ever being used. High ranking Workers are given almost the same level of respect and authority as any other caste leader, more so in some regards as they have managed to overcome the circumstances of their genes. Dissent, however, often remains, and Workers are the most heavily monitored caste in Xah, with little privacy allowed and constant watching of both their work, and their behaviour. The overt presence of Guards is common in Worker areas of the hives and whilst crime generally is low all over Xah, it is higher in Worker communities. Unrepentant dissidents are arrested and assigned to penal tasks or, for the most recalcitrant, prison or exile.
