The Ghalimi Cooperative

Consisting of the entirety of the ghalimi species, the Ghalimi cooperative is an A2 Occupant of the Nexus. Considered one of, if not the oldest of the currently active Occupants, the Ghalimi were instrumental in the formation of the Nexus in its current form and consider themselves as one of the more mature and responsible Occupants. Described in one way as technological sophisticated and socially mature, the GC can also be seen as moribund and idle, with only a small minority of their large population actively involved in Nexus affairs.

History

The start of recorded history for the ghalimi species is a difficult to pinpoint, as the primitive ghalimi were not literate, and as species with a minimal creative output, oral historical traditions were not a common occurrence. Ghalimi placed high importance on the literal transmission of skills, not the telling of stories. However, at some point in their history, ghalimi were turned from an intelligent predator on the cusp of significant developmental milestones, to a technologically proficient culture expanding out from their home world. Whilst the exact reasons for this transformation are not known, evidence points to interference from an outside force, who discovered the existence of ghalimi and enabled their transition. Further evidence points to an ancient civilisation from the third planet of the Ko system, once a bountiful temperate world, but now a largely desiccated wasteland. Ruins and other artificial structures litter the surface of the planet, and the orbital space of both it and a number of other worlds contained abandoned technological constructs, most of which were taken up by the ghalimi. What became of this species is not definitively known, but the ghalimi insist that they ascended to a higher plane of existence, something they themselves are aspiring towards.

The result of this 'Uplifting' (as the ghalimi themselves refer to is) was an exponential growth in their civilisation. Freed from the constraints of their homeworld, the ghalimi soon dominated not only their own system, but several of the local systems too, colonising other gas giants where they could, and constructing habitats around others. As a virtually biologically immortal species, the slow pace of their spacecraft was not an issue, and the ghalimi tended not to develop new technologies, nor have a significant cultural output, so the detachment each colony faced did not cause issues with drift. The slow expansion of their civilisation would undoubtedly covered their entire galaxy had the Nexus gate not opened.
