Takenra Incursion

Post by Qora » Tue Feb 12, 2019 5:48 am

-:- Cryogenic Stasis Lifted -:-
The patrol fleet consisting of 20 corvettes with 5,841 souls serving the flotilla arrives at the edge of Takenra's gravitational influence. Hours pass as the crew rewakens from stasis and as Digoxin reawakens their hibernating bodies from the sleep they have undergone for the last 10 months. Aboard the Command Corvette, the Commodore and her Captain's Warrant Officers head to the helm to review system information. Their mission as part of the Imperial Third Fleet is to evaluate and maintain order among the fringe worlds and to protect them from Xenos incursion. The Navigational Cogitator on its screen flashes the general state of the system

-:- Arrived at the Takenrah System

Yellow Star System consisting of four terrestrial worlds, 3 gas giants, and a dense asteroid belt.
The third and fourth terrestrial worlds colonized and producing raw minerals and consumer goods.
Combined Population of 300m.

Distress Signal Detected -:-

"Commodore Desana. The Navigational Cogitator has downloaded the distress files. Shall I relay them to your station?"
"The drugs are taking longer than usual to kick in. Would you kindly read it to me?"

"Certainly Commodore. The reports in chronological order are as follows; On Takenra 6e, a moon planned to house a low EM listening post started to house complex life. Standard passive observation conducted. Large chitinous beasts with four legs, two small tendril-like appendages, and a large verticle mandible coupled with smaller beasts that appear to gather amongst the dusty landscape. At first glance, they appear to be lithovores as they feed upon the rocks. Several photographs seem to have been taken as they partaken in base animal matters such as fighting amongst themselves. The Psionic Cogitator dictated that the species seen have no psionic ability but are very susceptible to it as they evolved to take orders from a greater power. Suspicions of a psionic hive mind on the planet but none found. Beasts dubbed Xenos Menace 324 (XM324).

XM324 has been seen coming from large cavernous entrances in cliff faces and through the ground itself gnawing their way through to their nests. Appear to avoid loose soils. Their physical structure appears top heavy and their movement speed emphasizes this as they put their center of mass forward as they lunge forward. Jaw strength indeterminable at this time.

After a period of two standard weeks, a biological vessel was picked up by the stellar base's sensors. The navigational path dictated it came from Takenra 6e from a portion of the world that was not under scientific surveillance. The science vessel and her crew intercepted the craft and logged enough information to give a basic analysis before it was shot down by what it described as a large slow moving bolt of blue plasma. That's when our patrol fleet was contacted.

Takenra 3 is currently undergoing heavy assault for the last month and requesting Naval assets to evacuate civilian personnel."

"By her name... why is it every Xenos species we meet wants to kill us? In any case looks like we actually have work to do. Has the assaulted world lost its spaceport yet?"

"Not yet, Commodore. They're holding their ground there. The Imperial Defence Force Garrison has conducted standard strategy and evacuated 90% of civilians off-world and lost all of their aircraft."

"Very well. Lieutenant, notify the fleet. We're going to the third world and evacuate the garrison. Captain, prepare an evacuation of the fourth world. I'll fabricate a transmission for support from the Third Fleet as well as Imperial Army assets. I'm sure this is just a prelude of what's to come."

Takenra 3

On Takenra 3, the Arachnids tore through the planet. The spaceport under siege, cities infested, manufacturing districts destroyed and military installations lost. The mysterious biological vessel continued to move between the two celestial objects before completely disappearing.

The western hemisphere was the first to be hit by the bug "surprise" attack. Though being dropped in the country side, the bugs soon organized as they assaulted the closest population centers. The cities were quickly overrun and the populations slaughtered. An accelerated colony was under construction due to the large number of Arachnids brought from Takenra 6e. Defensive troops responded to calls for help only to be met with swarms of Warriors and be cut down. The bodies of the dead eventually began to disappear from the old battlegrounds.

Over the month, defensive lines continued to pull back as the Arachnids swarmed and overran them. Now, the spaceport and a select few pockets scattered across the planet remain. All in danger of being overrun without help. Some pockets managed to stay undetected from the Arachnids, but only by remaining off the grid and having no contact with any other part of the planet. Some having been destroyed, still had active distress signals.

The spaceport was completely encircled by Arachnids as they circled the installation, occasionally a couple of Arachnids testing the defenses. While it may have seemed like to any possible defenders that the Arachnids were weary of attacking the fortified position, in reality, the Arachnids were growing their forces and preparing an all out charge. The Arachnid numbers in the siege grew day by day and finally, they were ready to start their assault. A few Arachnids on all sides of the spaceport moved in to test the defenses and after they were struck down, it began. Every Arachnid in the siege, which totaled over 12,000, began a charge towards the spaceport. Rounds struck the Arachnids as they charged, blood squirting out, limbs ripping off, and finally a fallen Arachnid. For each Arachnid cut down by fire, several more replaced it. The screeching from the Arachnids were at times unbearable, enough so to give the less resilient nightmares. Coming to any defensive placements, the Arachnids charged through them, climb over them, and used their fallen as step stools.

On the planet as a whole, there totaled over 25,000 Arachnids with at least two developing, accelerated colonies, each pushing out a thousand new Arachnids every few days. The colonies themselves were relatively under-defended, a highly dangerous and rarely used action from the Arachnids. To combat this, there remained only two entrances to each of the two colonies, and are well hidden to avoid detection.

Takenra 6e

On Takenra 6e, things for the Arachnids were relatively peaceful. They had two colonies, a Class 2 and a Class 1 colony. The planet totaled at least 20,000 Arachnids. Workers continued to build out the colonies, Minions bugs continued to fulfill their assigned tasks, and Warriors scouted, patrolled and performed overwatch on the colony openings. New horrors though, awaited those who trekked close to Takenra 6e.

"Commodore. We have arrived at Takenra 3"
"Very good."
"Commodore. I've looked at the intelligence gathered by the now expired science teams. According to its form, the Cephalothorax seems to be a weakness. Heavy damage to it should immobilize it as their smaller appendages appear ill-suited for movement. We won't know more until we are able to conduct a full autopsy."
"Very good, Physician. Forward that to the Centuries."
"Commodore, it would appear that the strange biological vessel has made several trips between Takenra 6e and 3 before leaving the system. The beast is able to travel in the void far faster than our ships can and thus has fled the system without us being able to predict its current movements."
"Thank you, Navigator. It seems the universe hates us so much it loves to outmatch us against far superior foes. Any return message from the Third fleet, Lieutenant?"
"They'll arrive in 13 months with three battlegroups consisting of a total of 20 light cruisers, two cruisers, and 35 corvettes."
"That's all we're getting?"
"Reserves from the core worlds would take 10-15 standard years to arrive in force along with elements of the 4th and 7th fleets."
"What of the First fleet?"
"They're unable to come. Suppressing another incursion in the core worlds. The Fourth is coming in their stead."

"Captain, if you'd be so kind as to forward the following message to the rest of the flotilla; We are to put emphasis on the defense of the starport until we can evacuate all civilian personnel. We'll use 18 out of our 20 ships and the IA aboard those vessels to lock down the starport. The other two are to hunt for hidden pockets amongst the territory claimed by the Xenos along with the two centuries aboard their ships. The Civilians evacuated are to go to Takenra 4 and to be put on alert. That world is the best option we have for resupply as the starport is not yet built for logistical support. Keep active defense measures online as these Xenos are capable of sailing the void. They may be also capable of sailing the skies as well."
"Message sent Commodore."
"Good. You have the bridge, Captain."
"Thank you, Commodore."
The Commodore leaves to review telemetric and strategic data that's being fed to his ready room from the other ships.

"Alright, Navigator, activate the Navigational Cogitator. We'll benefit from its advise, especially since every damned Xenos always sets up Surface to Void weapons. Gunner, we'll need to conduct kinetic bombardment. You know what shells we need. Also, assign the defense systems to the Tactical Cogitator and link up the Artillery Comms to the missile system. Suppression will assist them greatly."

The patrol fleet entered low orbit in a dispersed formation. Two of the ships split off in different directions along the equator using high-resolution imaging and geographic telemetry to conduct kinetic bombardment with their 10cm guns and 20mm guided Space to Surface missiles. The other 18 ships conduct their own kinetic bombardment with tactical data being sent from the defense forces around the starport and other nearby elements followed by dropships dropping from the bellies of the corvettes landing in the defended areas around the port itself. With fear of aerial assault, their CIWS (Close-In Weapon Systems) and AMLDS (Anti-Missile Laser Defense System) were online as they searched the skies with Navigational Cogitators using sensors to find and avoid any Surface to Void attack. The main force then flew to low orbit to better suppress the attacking swarm.

The two ships that split off in different directions using all of their sensor arrays searching for any ground and underground activity as they headed towards the active distress signals. Upon arrival to all distress signals they scanned for any IDF activity and found no survivors in any of them.

A total of 1,818 souls split into three cohorts and coordinated the defenses between the IDF to evacuate as much personnel as they could and maintain the perimeter. Their higher morale and better training increased the morale of the breaking IDF.

Takenra 3

The Arachnids assaulting the spaceport, having made it past the first barrier of defenses were now starting to be held back as incoming fire became a bit more accurate and the defending troops moral increased. With the additions of reinforcements, the areas of defense that were in danger of breaking managed to hold together. Still, the Arachnids pushed forward into fire, killing anyone unlucky enough to be caught in their path.

Once the corvettes were in position, they launched their first volley, killing hundreds of Arachnids due to their proximity to each other. A second volley and more Arachnids were cut down. Learning of the additional firepower, the Arachnid swarm broke apart and swarmed several different areas rather than a few specific ones which also allowed the Arachnids to start pushing further in again. The split would cause fire from the corvettes to become less effective but still allow them to cut decent amounts down.

On the northen end where the weakest part of the defense stood, the Arachnids pushed through and were now threatening the defending soldiers. Meanwhile, on the southern side of the spaceport, the defense had been so successful, a pile of Arachnids now stood in the way of the troops fire. Yet, the Arachnids crawled over their dead and used the pile as a jumping point to land closer to the defending troops. While the battle continued to rage on, the front of the swarm was now too close to defenses and defending troops that fire from the corvettes could cause friendly fire while the end of the swarm regrouped together and began circling the spaceport.

The corvettes and landing ships were waiting and on edge for things that wouldn't come. No matter how sure they were, no aerial or StV (Surface to Void) troops appeared. All that was ever found were land troops. Primarily of the Warrior class, but occasionally mixed with the Warriors, a similar, slightly smaller bug of the Worker class, was mixed with the Warriors.

A group of survivors who managed to stay hidden heard explosions in the distance. Looking out of their cover, they saw a corvette in the distance firing at the ground as it moved. Knowing it was their only chance for survival, the survivors sent out a transmission in the hopes the corvette would receive it.

"Hello? Military ship, can you hear us? We need help! We're trapped to your East and these things are all around us. We have kids and injured and we won't last much longer. We need help immediately. Please, help us.

The Arachnids in the surrounding area began screeching loudly as they moved towards the civilians. The group of Arachnids near the corvette suddenly turned, changing directions and began a rush towards the area of the civilians.

"Alright, now form a Cordon around the spaceport. We need to hold that position as long as possible and it seems that the Xenos are insisting on dying. Our 18 vessels are more than enough to have a crossfire capable of defending all portions of the port."
In unison, a "Yes, M'Lord" went through the intercom.
"M'Lord, sensors are indicating that the Xenos have failed to deploy any surface to void transgressors."
"Very well, Master Gunner. Set the point defense lasers to suppress ground targets."
"Yes, M'Lord."
"Notify the crews across all ships to acquire scientific data on the Xenos. Photographic, video, corpses... the standard procedure."

The commodore watches the console as the battle progressed. Sensors indicated that the northern defences were buckling and the southern defences were having a mountain of corpses piling up against the low walls that prevented civilians from driving onto the launching pads and the logistic fields. "Master Gunner, when you're able, have some HE missiles clear those mountains up. We don't want those Xenos climbing over the walls."
"Understood M'Lord."

One of the midshipmen on deck spoke up, "M'Lord. Seems we risk the possibility of friendly fire on ground assets. Shouldn't we-"
"No, in accordance to Imperial Law we have no authority over Imperial Army assets."
"I don't understand... aren't we the Imperial Army?"
"We have the legal authority to leave Qorsikan territory as we are Imperial Army, yes. But we're primarily the Imperial Navy which means our domain is on the seas, skies, and in the void. Theirs is on land."

"Lord Physician. It would appear that the Xenos are capable of detecting and locating psionic transmissions."
"Fascinating. Akira, are you sensing any psionic energies?"
"They seem to only hear and anything foreign to them seems to aggravate them. Perhaps these are Her enemy."

The corvette heading eastwards launches its cargo of IA assets through the use of drop pods, building a cordon of infantry and HWPs, and proceeds to suppress the incoming swarm of Xenos with 10cm HE shells and 20cm HE missiles. Meanwhile, it also launches its own transport craft towards the civilians.

Takenra 3

The Arachnids overwhelmed the northern end of the spaceport, pushing through the fence and barricades, slaughtering the soldiers unfortunate enough to be stationed there. The Arachnids poured through and moved to sow chaos in the enemy ranks. Immediately, those around the Northern area fell before they could react, but a secondary line was quickly established to hold the Arachnids back.

A corvette opened fire on the piles of dead Arachnids, blowing it apart, but greatly damaging the fence and causing a whole to appear within the fence for the Arachnids to exploit. Several defenders were injured in the blast. A portion of the Arachnids moved to exploit the new opening in the fence, creating a kill zone and causing a new pile of Arachnid bodies. The other portion continued to attack the weakened area, still being mowed down.

The east and west portion of the space port were holding well enough, though the west had fewer attacks despite there being a large Arachnid presence. The corvettes continued to tear through the Arachnid lines, unrelenting and indiscriminate. Yet, surprising still, Arachnids on the outer ends of the corvettes rounds, or even lucky fire from ground troops, would tear off several limbs and the Arachnid still stood up and moved towards the spaceport.

The Arachnids swarmed to the group of civilians calling for help, screeching loudly. The newly dropped troops were bum rushed by the Arachnids that were previously in the area, killing several before being cut down. The incoming Arachnids counted upwards to 380 and pushed hard against the newly established line.

Takenra 6e

The Arachnids on Takenra 6e used the relative peace to expand their colonies and build up their numbers. Having two colonies, the Arachnid numbers began to accelerate, quickly overtaking the amount of Arachnids on Takenra 3.

Takenra 3

"Defensive fallback on my call," bellows the leading Centurion, Ma'dur of the 4th century, onto his headset before blowing the horn. The line starts to make a small retreat putting more space between the mountains of bug corpses. The corvettes hovering overhead destroying these mounds with HE shots preventing the bugs from using that as any form of cover from the hail of gunfire they were receiving. "Agamemnon, cover fire on the right flank. The 5th century is exposed out there."

The 3-meter tall automaton clicks with confirmation, turns, and lets loose a hail of gunfire protecting the 5th century's left flank as the wide formation starts to narrow and get pushed back.

Meanwhile on Commodore Desena's command corvette, "What the hell you mean reinforcements are delayed? The godless Ella'ans? Good gods. Your damned Imperial Council has had war declared on us while we're having a northern incursion against a clearly HOSTILE Xenos species? Don't tell me that we were also going to get assistance from the damnable heathens as well." A momentary pause before Desena yells back onto the psionic comms link "They were!? I need those reinforcements as scheduled. We're going to need cruisers and carriers if we are to safeguard Her People! Fine. I'll take half of what was promised earlier." He slams the voice piece to hang up and turns to his yeoman. "Get me a drink. This is going to be a lot more annoying than we've thought."

"Commodore, I'll take it that IA reinforcements aren't arriving in full force?"

"Unfortunately, Captain. I'll be in my ready room if you need me. Keep suppressing those ground forces and have the wings keep scouring the planet of where they're coming from. I need to figure out our next move in the meantime."

Fighting fiercely, the defending troops on the Northern end put up a valiant defense. Though some were sacrificed with the call to retreat, the troops made their way to a better defendable area with the Arachnids behind them. The HWP's and soldier's retreat tactic made sure to hinder the Arachnids as their numbers dropped and their advance was slowed. Though having no chance, the soldiers who were sacrificed put up a valiant fight before succumbing to the Arachnid horde. The Northern end, now in serious danger of breaking, saw more Arachnids from the west and east sides move to exploit this area.

The mounds of dead Arachnids were continuously blown apart by corvette fire. Yet, every time a mound was destroyed, a new one began to take its place. The cycle was the result of endless, reckless assault by the Arachnids who cared little to nothing about their own safety. And it is because of this reckless behavior that allows the Arachnids to keep inching closer and closer to defending troops on the southern end. Each Arachnid that fell had another behind it that would take its place and absorb incoming fire to allow the Arachnid behind itself to move a couple steps closer. Though most of the Arachnids on the Southern end were funneling themselves through an opening in the fence, with the constant bombardment and endless crashing of Arachnids, the fence began to buckle and soon fell, allowing the Arachnids to attack in a couple more places.

The West and East sides seemed to be holding well enough, though oddly the West wasn't having as hard of a time as much of the Arachnid forces there held back. The East end was hit a bit harder but still managed to hold. A couple of Arachnids managed to jump over the fence before a mound was destroyed. Though these Arachnids were quickly cut down, one of the Arachnids nearly managed to reach the soldiers line despite having lost multiple limbs and sustained numerous wounds.

The bugs screeching was truly horrendous, capable of putting fear into even the strongest of people. Though it was difficult to say if this horrendous screeching was how the bugs communicated or not as one could observe moments where the bugs screeching would direct others and at other times, no meaning behind a screech.

Elsewhere on the planet, the bugs rushed to remove the presence of these new troops so they could reach the cause of the signals. While some of the new troops were taken down before they could put up much of a fight, the soldiers were quick to react and begin their fighting against the Arachnids in order to protect the civilians.
